Did you know that Mozart, Beethoven and most composers of that era used to conduct their piano concerti from the keyboard? Wouldn’t you love to experience this type of concert?

In this stunning second concert of the 2025/26 Season IN MOTION, Olympia Symphony welcomes internationally celebrated pianist and conductor Michael Sheppard, known for his “absolutely gorgeous sound and refined technique” (The Washington Post), in a deeply expressive program featuring pieces by the Mendelssohn’s (Fanny and her brother Felix!), Beethoven and Michael Daugherty.

We begin with the long-overlooked brilliance of Fanny Mendelssohn, whose Overture in C bursts with Romantic-era sparkle and symphonic flair. Then, her brother Felix Mendelssohn takes the spotlight with his playful, virtuosic Capriccio Brilliante, letting the piano dance with joy and elegance.

At the heart of the program lies Beethoven’s Piano Concerto No. 4, a profoundly moving work that redefined the relationship between soloist and orchestra—subtle, tender, and full of intimate dialogue.

And finally, prepare for a show-stopping finale with Michael Daugherty’s Le Tombeau de Liberace—a bold, theatrical, and brilliantly irreverent tribute to the legendary entertainer, where classical meets kitsch in glittering, unforgettable fashion.  Fun Fact: Liberace established a foundation to support young artists around the country. Michael Sheppard was one of the awardees, helping him in his studies at Peabody Conservatory.

Whether you're a lifelong music lover or just discovering the magic of the symphony, this concert invites you to pause... and truly LISTEN.
